First of all, you CAN NOT do a direct firmware upgrade from v5.1 to v6.3.6. You must apply intermediary updates one at a time.
Upgrading a Nortel / Avaya Baystack ERS 5510/5520 firmware from v5.1 to v6.3.6 requires several steps. First of all prepare a TFTP server and all the related (secure/ssh) firmwares listed below:
1. v6.0 - 55x0_60006_diags.bin , 55x0_600005s.img 2. v6.2.7 - 5xxx_60018_diags.bin , 5xxx_627019s.img 3. v6.3.5 - 5xxx_60021_diags.bin , 5xxx_636017s.img
The diagnostics image file needs to be the first firmware to be applied at each stage of the upgrade. Run the following command in CLI to transfer the firmware and perform the update:
switch# download address x.x.x.x diag 55x0_60006_diags.bin no-reset
then apply the software image update
switch# download address x.x.x.x image 55x0_600005s.img
You must go through the updates above in sequence, applying the diagnostics image files first and then the software image file second. After uploading software image file, the switch will automatically reboot and install the firmware during the boot.
The show sys-info command as well as the front page of the console will display the installed firmware version confirming that the firmware has been successfully loaded.
